The Real Reason We Smile in Photos | The InSight Out Show | Ep. 245

There is always someone in the family photo who refuses to smile. And somehow, we notice. A smile in a picture feels so normal now that we almost read it as a sign of happiness, warmth, or approachability. But for a long time, smiling in formal photos was considered strange, unserious, or even inappropriate.

That changed when cameras became more personal and companies like Kodak helped turn the smile into the expected expression of joy. Which raises an interesting question: how much of what we call “authentic” is actually something culture taught us to perform? And if joy is deeper than an expression, what would it have looked like on the face of Jesus?

Scripture (NIV): Proverbs 15:13 – “A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit.”

Reflection Questions:

When people see your face, do they see what is really going on in your heart, or just what you have learned to show?What do you imagine the expressions of Jesus revealed about His joy, sorrow, compassion, and love?
